THE OLIVE TREE THEATRE Fossacesia, Italy
A theatre in the Olive Grove: linking the cultivation of olives with the culture of the arts.
Located in a gentle valley comprising two main slopes, each with its respective olive tree plantation grid, the project is set into the existing landscape all the while respecting the framework woven by the hand of man.
The entry to the theatre is located at the highest point of the site alongside the welcome pavilion and winter theatre. A path amongst the olive trees leads the visitor from this culminating point towards the main summer theatre below, whose form follows the contours of the valley. Inspired by the local vernacular construction of the Tribocchi, the construction of the theatre expresses the rudimentary post and beam construction, topped with benches, all in local pine. The circulation paths, in limestone, define a contrasting rhythm between timber seating and the mineral circulation alleys and axes.
The ensemble of structures, pavilions and pathways and their material palette seek to be subservient to the olive grove, privileging an architectural and cultural experience amongst the olive trees.
